How Job Cuts are Hurting

By: Dr. Kirkpatrick Williams
Last week, I was a dedicated employee working as a contractor for the Veterans Administration, committed to serving the organization that is dedicated to promoting the welfare of our nation’s heroes. However, following the recent federal workforce reductions initiated by President Donald Trump and spearheaded by Elon Musk through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), I, along with thousands of others, find myself no longer with the VA and grappling with uncertainty.

The termination notice I received was abrupt and impersonal, and came in the guise of a status call. I was told that “though my abilities are high, budget reductions have forced the agency to make cuts.” This came as a shock, considering my years of service and dedication to exemplary service. The layoffs were not limited to the Veterans Administration; agencies like the Small Business Administration and the General Services Administration also faced significant cuts, with hundreds of employees dismissed without substantive justification.

The rationale provided by the administration centers on reducing wasteful spending and enhancing efficiency within the federal government. While fiscal responsibility is undeniably important, the method by which these cuts have been implemented raises serious concerns. The indiscriminate elimination of positions, particularly those filled by probationary employees, suggests a lack of strategic planning and an undervaluation of the roles that contribute to the effective functioning of public services. In my case, I was relieved of my duties while supporting 3 major Veterans Administration projects.

Beyond the personal impact, these layoffs have broader implications for the American public. The Department of Veterans Affairs plays a crucial role in shaping policies that affect millions of veterans and their families nationwide. Reducing its workforce so drastically hampers its ability to fulfill its mission, potentially undermining the quality of care and support provided to America’s heroes. Similar consequences are likely in other agencies facing cuts, leading to diminished public services and oversight.

The economic justification for such extensive layoffs is also questionable. Elon Musk's ambitious goal of cutting $2 trillion from the federal budget has been met with skepticism from budget experts, who argue that achieving such reductions without severely impacting essential services and entitlement programs is implausible. Even Musk himself has acknowledged the challenges, later suggesting that a $1 trillion cut might be a more realistic target.

The human cost of these decisions cannot be overlooked. Thousands of dedicated public servants now face unemployment, with limited prospects in an economy already showing signs of strain due to other policy decisions, such as the administration's tariff implementations. The psychological and financial toll on these individuals and their families is profound, and the ripple effects will be felt in communities across the country.

In response to these developments, protests have erupted nationwide. The "Hands Off!" demonstrations reflect widespread dissatisfaction with the administration's approach to governance, highlighting concerns over the dismantling of public services, attacks on civil liberties, and the concentration of power among a wealthy few.

As someone directly affected by these layoffs, I urge the administration to reconsider its approach. Efficiency should not come at the expense of effectiveness. A government cannot function without a dedicated and skilled workforce. Thoughtful, transparent, and strategic planning is essential to ensure that efforts to streamline operations do not undermine the very services they aim to improve.

The path forward requires collaboration, not unilateral decisions that disregard the contributions of public servants. It is imperative that the voices of those affected are heard and that policies are implemented with a clear understanding of their human and societal impact. Only then can we hope to build a government that truly serves its people with both efficiency and compassion.
