Building Success from the Ground Up: The Story of Remington Madlock and Madlock Lawn Care & More LLC

by: Dee Dee Reese

For nearly nine years, Remington Madlock has been shaping landscapes and revitalizing communities through his business, Madlock Lawn Care & More, LLC. What started as a simple lawn-cutting service has evolved into a thriving enterprise specializing in lawn care, landscaping, lot clearing, and city contracting. With a solid reputation built on word of mouth, Madlock has proven that dedication, vision, and hard work can lead to success.

From the age of eight, Remington knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur. While he wasn’t certain what field he’d enter, he was sure he wanted to build something of his own. By thirteen, like many young boys, he started cutting grass for neighbors to make extra money. Over time, he discovered that landscaping gave him a sense of satisfaction. “I compare it to being a barber,” he explains. “If you’re a barber, you love the process, the precision, and the finished product. That’s how I feel about cutting grass.”

Remington’s business journey truly began when his brother-in-law, who struggled to find work due to a criminal record, needed an opportunity. Seeing a chance to help, Remington invested in equipment while his brother-in-law handled the labor. They started small, working with push mowers and weed eaters, but over time, the business grew.

Today, Madlock Lawn Care & More, LLC, serves both private and commercial clients. While much of its work is based in Shreveport, the company also operates in surrounding areas such as Benton and Haughton. The business contracts with the City of Shreveport, where Remington has been a contractor for six years, assisting with lot cleaning, clearing dilapidated structures, and revitalizing neighborhoods.

Remington’s journey has not been without its challenges. Transitioning from a steady job to full-time entrepreneurship was a leap of faith. Financial hurdles also proved to be a major challenge. Securing capital as a new business owner was nearly impossible. “I had the manpower, I had the skills, but I needed money to keep the business running,” he recalls. Early on, there were days when he had just enough gas to make it to a job, knowing he’d be paid in cash to refuel and keep going. But through perseverance and strategic networking, he overcame those difficulties.

One of Remington’s turning points came after five years in business. He noticed a shift: instead of chasing work, work started coming to him. “After that five-year mark, I could see that I had built something sustainable. People started reaching out to me instead of the other way around.”
Remington employs a dedicated team of eight full-time workers, expanding to 12–14 during peak seasons. Some of his employees have been with him since the beginning, demonstrating the loyalty and strong work ethic that defines his company culture. His brother-in-law, the person who helped start it all, still plays a key role in operations today.

Beyond business, Remington is committed to giving back to his community, offering employment opportunities to those who may struggle to find work elsewhere. His belief in networking and relationships has played a crucial role in his success. “It’s not just what you know, it’s who you know,” he says, crediting his mother for that invaluable lesson.

What keeps Remington going? His passion for his work and the drive to create generational wealth. “In the Black community, wealth-building is often overlooked or misunderstood. I want to change that for my family.” Though he doesn’t have biological children, he sees his business as a legacy to pass down to his nieces and nephews, providing them with opportunities that previous generations didn’t have.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, his advice is simple: never quit. “There will always be obstacles, but the difference between success and failure is pushing through them.”
As Madlock Lawn Care & More, LLC continues to grow, one thing remains clear. Remington’s dedication to excellence, community, and perseverance will keep his business thriving for years to come.
