Breaking Barriers in Health Education: Shauna Morris’s Journey

Shauna Morris began her career in this field in May 2023 as the Mobile Wellness and Opportunity Center Administrator when her director reached out about a new project. She was immediately drawn to the role due to its strong potential for community impact. Her work is far from routine. She travels across Louisiana to deliver health education, screenings, and fun community events. Her role involves partnering with Head Start, public schools, and residents to address community needs. Growing up in an underprivileged neighborhood, Shauna values the opportunity to give back. Her background motivates her to help others overcome challenges and thrive, reinforcing her commitment to community impact.

Shauna stated one standout moment was addressing bullying at a school. She facilitated a conversation among students (with a teacher’s help), and she witnessed firsthand how her efforts could empower change and foster empathy among young people. Shauna highlights the logistical challenges of planning events statewide and navigating unfamiliar areas. Over time, she has built confidence in managing these hurdles and understanding regional nuances.

A notable aspect of her work is the assurance that the services provided by the Mobile Wellness Unit are entirely free—even for those not AmeriHealth Caritas members. This commitment to accessibility underscores the unit’s community-first approach.
The best advice she received was a reminder that “it is temporary.” This perspective has helped her manage job challenges and personal losses, ensuring she stays resilient and focused on her mission.

Although her core responsibilities have remained steady (with around 20 monthly events), she has grown more adept at overcoming obstacles, such as bus maintenance or bad weather. An achievement she cherishes is being named “Associate of the Month” at AmeriHealth Caritas, a recognition that affirmed her contributions and dedication. When asked if she’d switch roles with anyone else in the company, Shauna was clear that her current position perfectly aligns with her creative strengths and the company’s mission. Her autonomy in developing and implementing programs is a key driver of her passion.

Her motivation comes from empathy and the understanding that those she serves could be anyone close to her. This perspective keeps her dedicated to making a tangible difference in communities.
